Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, a shipbuilder based in South Korea, recently completed the delivery of the CMA CGM ERMITAGE over the past weekend. This vessel, with a capacity of 2,126 TEU and powered by LNG, is the second of a series of ten ships commissioned by CMA CGM specifically for the European short-sea market.

The construction of the CMA CGM ERMITAGE follows that of its predecessor, the CMA CGM MERMAID. CMA CGM placed the order for these ten gearless vessels in November 2021, with each unit priced at USD 63 million.

These ships, measuring 204.29 meters in length and 29.60 meters in width (equivalent to 11 rows), have a deadweight of 31,000 TEU with a draft of 10.00 meters. They are optimized to accommodate a significant portion of intermodal containers, often 45 feet long, high-cube, and pallet-wide.

Given their intended trading area in Northern Europe, these vessels are equipped with a 1A ice-class notation. They feature a forward superstructure, a bulbless bow, and an aerodynamically optimized foreship. Their design enables passage through the Kiel Canal, which has draft and air draft restrictions of 9.50 meters and 40.00 meters, respectively, for ships of this size.

The main engine powering these ships is an MAN B&W-6S60ME-C10.5-GI type engine capable of delivering up to 17,000 kW. Additionally, they can supply electricity to up to 650 reefer containers.

CMA CGM’s inaugural ship of this new series, the CMA CGM MERMAID, is slated to enter service on the carrier’s Germany – Finland route ‘FLX.’ This route connects Hamburg, Kotka, Helsinki, Tallinn-Muuga, Gdansk, Bremerhaven, and Hamburg, with two vessels operating on a two-week round trip. The CMA CGM ERMITAGE is expected to join its sister ship on this service after positioning to Europe. The third vessel of this new type, named the CMA CGM TIVOLI, is scheduled for delivery in May.
