MSC Faces Potential $63M Fine for Shipping Act Violations

MSC joins fuel surcharge by OMI 2020 regulation: It is expected that the operating costs of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. increase significantly as the line continues to prepare for the low sulfur fuel regime 2020. Therefore, MSC introduces a new global fuel surcharge as of January 1, 2019 to help customers plan the impact of the fuel regime after 2020.

The new MSC Global Fuel Surcharge will replace existing surcharge mechanisms in the bunkers and reflect a combination of fuel prices at supply ports around the world and specific line costs, such as transit times, fuel efficiency and other related factors with the trade.

The cost of the various changes that MSC is making in its fleet and its fuel supply exceeds two trillion dollars (USD) per year.

MSC operates a modern and green fleet and seeks to operate in a sustainable and responsible manner, guided by social and environmental values in its business plans and practices. The company is committed to contributing to global efforts to reduce ship emissions and fully supports the work of the UN IMO in this area.

It is also expected that a plan to optimize energy efficiency through continuous assessment of commercial route networks will help limit fuel use and improve service reliability.
