Indian Navy Makes History With First-Ever Tri-Commissioning Of Warships & Submarine

In a historic move, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three frontline naval combatants, namely, INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer on the 15th of January, 2025 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

This marks the first-ever simultaneous commissioning of a destroyer, frigate and submarine. The day is also commemorated as Army Day in India. In his speech, PM Modi discussed the importance of the occasion.

He added that the commissioning ceremony solidifies India’s “Make In India” initiative, to strengthen domestic defence production.

INS Surat is a P15B guided missile destroyer, and one of the largest and most advanced destroyers built in India, with 75% indigenous content.

INS Nilgiri is a stealth frigate under the P17A project, incorporating advanced design and stealth technologies.
