World’s 1st Certified Electric Hydrofoiling Ferry Enters Service In New Zealand
Vessev’s VS-9 electric hydro foiling ferry, named Kermadec, has officially entered commercial service with Fullers360, New Zealand’s largest ferry transport and tourism operator.
This is the first time a certified electric hydro foiling vessel has joined the fleet of an operator for commercial use.
The VS-9 will now operate tourism trips across Auckland’s waterways, offering a fast and smooth travel experience. The nine-meter ferry travels at a service speed of 25 knots and has a range of 50 nautical miles (92.6 km), powered by type-approved battery packs.
Its hydrofoiling technology is adapted from America’s Cup racing yachts, allowing it to “fly” above the water instead of sailing through waves.
Vessel CEO Eric Laakmann stated that the entry of the VS-9 into Fullers360’s fleet will help the company reach its net zero target by 2040. He also said that the public can now experience the same advanced technology that Vessev has been testing since launching the VS-9 in May 2024.
