Watch: Leaking Cargo Ship Lists & Drifts Dangerously Off Java Coast, 18 Crew Saved
Indonesian authorities successfully rescued 18 crew members from a cargo ship after it began listing near Madura Island on January 18, 2025.
The vessel, Suryani Ladjoni, a general cargo ship built in 1977, with a deadweight of 2,380 tons started taking on water and listed 25-degree to port. It was on its way from Banjarmasin to Surabaya.
The rescue operation began early in the morning when the captain of Suryani Ladjoni reported to the authorities that water was flooding the ship.
At around 06:00 local time, the captain informed rescue teams that the vessel was leaking from several points, including the keel and both sides, causing the severe list.
