Dundalk Marine Terminal in Baltimore to Receive $31 Million Enhancement
The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $30,906,076 for the refurbishment of the Dundalk Marine Terminal at the Port of Baltimore. This funding is part of a broader $38.4 million initiative, which also includes support for the Curtis Creek Drawbridge, highlighting the Port’s vital contribution to Maryland’s economy.
Dundalk Marine Terminal, featuring 13 berths, four container cranes, and direct rail access, stands as the largest and most adaptable general cargo facility within the Port of Baltimore. It serves various cargo types, including containers, automobiles, farm and construction roll-on/roll-off (Ro/Ro) equipment, wood pulp, steel, breakbulk, and project cargo.
The investment will facilitate significant renovations to Berth 11, which includes repairing and replacing 597 linear feet of wharf deck, along with essential upgrades to pilings, substructures, and stormwater drainage systems. The improvements will include new mooring bollards, pneumatic fenders, and flood barriers, greatly enhancing the terminal’s operational efficiency and resilience.
Senator Chris Van Hollen remarked, “These substantial federal investments are preparing the Port for future expansion while maintaining the thousands of jobs it supports and modernizing a crucial bridge for transportation and commerce.” He added that these initiatives will contribute to Baltimore’s economic development and create better-paying jobs for Maryland residents.
This funding comes from the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Grant Program (INFRA) and is a product of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
Senator Ben Cardin pointed out that Baltimore is home to crucial supply chain infrastructure that requires timely investment and enhancements. Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld also noted the wider economic implications of the project, stating, “These federal grants will promote increased economic growth at the Port of Baltimore and throughout the larger Baltimore region.”
This significant investment in the Dundalk Marine Terminal is expected to greatly improve the competitiveness of the Port of Baltimore, enhance its cargo handling capabilities, and solidify Maryland’s position in the global maritime trade landscape.
