Throughput at the Port of New York and New Jersey (NY/NJ) surpassed the 9 Mteu mark for the first time ever in 2022, putting the East Coast port surprisingly close to the volume handled by the Port of Los Angeles. says Alphaliner.
Annual volumes for the port, which generally ranks third after Los Angeles and Long Beach, reached 9.49 Mteu in 2022, up from 8.98 Mteu the year before and only 417,500 TEU less than those handled by Los Angeles. .
NY/NJ has steadily increased its traffic each year since 2017, but volumes increased in 2022 in response to congestion issues and the threat of labor strikes.
