A tanker smashed into the bridge linking Japan’s Kansai International Airport with the mainland on Tuesday as a powerful typhoon slammed Japan’s western coast. The tanker, named Houn Maru, was anchored in Osaka Bay but strong winds produced by Typhoon “Jebi” proved just too much and the ship drifted into the bridge, causing damage to both the bridge and tanker.

The video shows the tanker’s superstructure embedded into the roadway as it is continuously pounded by heavy surf. All 11 crew members on board are reported safe. The Houn Maru has a gross tonnage of 2,591 and is flagged in Japan. Reports say the Kansai airport has been shut down indefinitely due to flooding and bridge damage.
