A batch of Russian warships of the Pacific Fleet sailed “ice fields” in the Pérouse Strait on their passage from the Sea of Japan to the Sea of Okhotsk, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The crossing was carried out in winter conditions as part of a planned naval exercise, which was led by Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Sergey Avakiants.
More than 20 Russian ships, including the corvettes Gremiaschi, Sovershennyi, Gromki and Aldar Tsydenzhapov, the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleev, the command ship Marshal Krylov, as well as small guided missile boats, anti-submarine ships and logistic ships are participating in this military training.
The journey through the cold ice fields took a couple of days and was assisted by naval aviation Ka-27PS helicopters, which scouted the route during navigation.
The icebreaker Captain Khlebnikov was in charge of opening the passage through the strait, which separates the Russian island of Sakhalin from the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
