A tragic missile strike on Odesa Port has resulted in the deaths of four seafarers aboard a bulk carrier, following an attack attributed to Russia. Additionally, one crew member and a port employee sustained injuries during the incident.
This assault occurred amid heightened tensions as both sides intensified thier military actions while the Trump administration advocated for peace negotiations.
The attack was anticipated after Ukraine’s drone strike on Moscow, with warnings indicating that Odesa might be targeted that evening.Sirens were activated at 8:00 PM local time, shortly before a significant explosion rocked the area.
The missile struck the seawall, causing extensive damage to the pier and grain terminal infrastructure. The vessel involved, registered in Barbados as MJ Pinar, was in Odesa loading 30,000 tonnes of wheat destined for Algeria when it was hit.
Onboard fires claimed the lives of three Syrian crew members and one Ukrainian sailor; another individual also suffered injuries. The ship had a total of 12 crew members along with a port employee who was injured during this devastating event.
This incident marks one of the most perilous situations for maritime workers at this port and coincided with U.S. decisions to renew military intelligence support and supply shipments to Ukraine.
As tensions remain high between Syria and Russia—particularly due to Syria’s refusal to allow Russian troops into its territory—the syrian government has yet to issue any statements regarding its citizens’ fatalities from this attack.
