Information given by the Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Buenaventura (Sprb) indicates that at the close of 2021 it received 8.9 million tons of cargo. This represents an increase of 43.5% compared to that obtained in 2020, when it was 6.2 million tons.
This is also more than 50% of the cargo received by the five terminals that make up the Buenaventura Bay, which totaled 17.8 million tons.
“We are very happy and proud of the results obtained during 2021, which are a reflection of the commitment of our employees, who despite the challenges we faced with the national strike blockades, the container crisis and the pandemic that still continues, have worked to continue to meet our customers and our region,” said Gustavo Flórez Dulcey, manager (E) of the Sprb.
The company participated with 40% in the movement of containers of the total traffic of the entire Bay, which amounted to 625,944 containers.
However, it was also known in the last few days that the cargo transporters union, Colfecar, pointed out that the lack of capacity to receive empty containers at the yards and maritime terminals, something that aggravates the activity in the port of Buenaventura, which went from “a critical situation to an unsustainable one”.
The executive president of Colfecar, Nidia Hernández Jiménez, mentioned that the crisis is due to the inefficient process of delivery of empty containers at the port, which affects the logistics operations of foreign trade in Colombia, due to the negative impact it has on overtime and high cost overruns.
Among the effects are the low rotation and availability of these containers, and consequently, freight costs for importers and exporters increase, with increases between 40% and 60%.
