OOCL Fleet Reaches 1 Million TEU

Hong Kong-based shipping company OOCL quietly achieved a fleet size of 1 million TEU during the first half of 2024. This milestone was reached after the delivery of the 7th to 11th vessels in a series of 24,188 TEU newbuildings from NACKS and DACKS, bringing the fleet size to 1,000,001 TEU as of June 31.

Although typically considered part of its parent company COSCO Group, OOCL would rank as the 8th largest container carrier individually, sitting behind Evergreen but well ahead of HMM. Meanwhile, COSCO SHIPPING Lines, on its own, would rank 4th, ahead of Hapag-Lloyd.

COSCO Group acquired OOCL in July 2018. The final ship in OOCL’s megamax newbuilding series, a 24,188 TEU vessel named OOCL PORTUGAL, will be delivered in Q3 2024. This vessel will join the Far East – North Europe ‘LL1’ service on September 19. Additionally, OOCL is set to receive another seven 24K methanol-powered megamax vessels from NACKS starting in September 2026.
