Innovative Label Solutions Enhance Brand Sustainability in Packaging

Lasting products may only represent 18.5% of the consumer packaged goods (CPG) market from 2013 to 2023,but they’ve been a powerhouse for growth, contributing to a whopping 31% of the industry’s expansion. As we look ahead, major CPG brands are setting enterprising goals for themselves—aiming for fully recyclable packaging by 2030. One area that’s getting some serious attention is labels.

Avery Dennison recently released an insightful white paper titled “Pressure-Sensitive Labels and Their Role in Making Packaging Circular.” This document explores how pressure-sensitive labels—found on everything from beverage containers to household cleaners—can assist brands in achieving their circularity objectives. It highlights both the hurdles and opportunities that companies face when designing packaging meant for recycling or reuse.

Ryan Yost, President of Avery Dennison’s materials Group, emphasizes the importance of this research: “This white paper serves as a valuable resource for CPG brands navigating sustainable packaging choices.” He points out that there’s increasing pressure from consumers, retailers, regulators, investors, and employees alike to embrace circular economy principles. Innovations in packaging are crucial as companies strive to meet these expectations.

One standout innovation discussed is a new “clean-release” label designed to detach easily during recycling processes. This feature not only enhances the quality of recycled plastics but also minimizes reliance on virgin materials like PET and HDPE—which have critically importent carbon footprints.

Consumer attitudes play a vital role too; around 31% of shoppers feel that investing in sustainable packaging is one of the most impactful steps brands can take against environmental challenges. With plastic use skyrocketing fourfold over three decades, it’s alarming that packaging now constitutes about 40% of global plastic waste.

the report also ties label advancements with increasing legislative demands such as Europe’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which encourages designs conducive to recycling and sets targets for reusable beverage containers by 2030.

Avery Dennison’s findings stem from discussions with CPG firms worldwide along with insights gathered from recyclers and regulatory bodies.

while we’re still at an early stage regarding sustainable practices within CPGs, innovations like clean-release labels could pave the way toward more responsible consumption patterns globally—and that’s something worth celebrating!
