End of an Era: Andrew Haines Steps Down as Network Rail’s Chief Executive

In the UK,Sir Andrew Haines,the Chief executive of Network Rail,has announced his plans to step down in October 2025.

The process for finding his successor will kick off soon,overseen by the Nomination & Remuneration Committee and pending approval from the Secretary of State.

“After seven years at the helm and with Great british Railways moving from concept to reality, I feel it’s time for me to retire,” Haines shared on March 31.”I truly believe in what Great British Railways stands for—a unique chance to build a cohesive railway system that enhances service quality for passengers and stakeholders alike. Leading this transformative journey has been an astonishing honor.”

Succeeding as Chief Executive in August 2018, Haines brought a wealth of experience from various roles within the rail sector. Before joining Network Rail, he was at the forefront of aviation as Chief Executive of the Civil Aviation Authority and held significant positions like Managing Director at South west Trains and FirstGroup’s Rail Division.

A pivotal moment came in September 2024 when then Transport Secretary Louise Haigh appointed him as one of three leaders steering Shadow Great British Railways—an initiative aimed at reforming industry practices ahead of formal legislation.
