Global tug supplier Svitzer has extended its contract with the Suez Canal Authority to include two additional tugs, providing the waterway with additional towing power.

Svitzer has been operating in the Suez Canal since late 2019 with the two tugs Svitzer Port Said 1 and Svitzer Port Said 2, both used in the effort to refloat the Ever Given, at the Canal’s Mediterranean entrance. Starting in the fourth quarter, the two new tugs of 70 tons each will begin operating from Port Suez, at the entrance to the Red Sea.

“The Suez Canal is the world’s most important global trade artery, and it is an honor that the Suez Canal Authority has awarded Svitzer an extension of the existing contract – it is a testament to our trusting relationship and valuable collaboration with the SCA,” said Nicolai Vinther Friis, CEO of Svitzer AMEA. “At Svitzer, we are proud to support SCA in its vision to provide a distinguished and uninterrupted service to vessels transiting the Suez Canal, thus ensuring the efficiency of global supply chains.”

The two tugs will be delivered from the Cheoy Lee shipyard in China and will be crewed by Egyptian personnel.
