CMA CGM and SUEZ Sign Long-Term Biomethane Deal for LNG Fleet
In a significant move towards greener shipping, French shipping company CMA CGM has entered a long-term agreement with waste management firm SUEZ for the supply of biomethane to power its fleet of LNG-fueled containerships. The agreement, spanning until 2030, aims to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane annually.
The partnership between CMA CGM and SUEZ goes beyond supply, involving a joint EUR 100 million (USD 108 million) investment program to develop biomethane production facilities. These facilities, initially based in Europe, will not only serve CMA CGM’s fleet but also support other stakeholders in the sector. Biomethane, a renewable fuel derived from waste recovery, aligns with both companies’ sustainability goals.
SUEZ, a leader in waste-to-energy conversion, processed 5 million tonnes of waste into energy in 2023, generating 382 GWh of biomethane. Under this deal, it will supply biomethane to CMA CGM’s gas-powered vessels, contributing to the shipping company’s plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The collaboration will also focus on research and development, with an emphasis on innovative biofuel technologies, including hydrothermal gasification processes. CMA CGM has committed USD 18 billion to the construction of 131 vessels capable of running on low-carbon fuels, such as biomethane, biomethanol, and synthetic fuels, which are expected to enter service by 2028.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and reducing the carbon footprint in the shipping and waste management industries.
