Charlotte, North Carolina, debuts truck parking tool

Charlotte, North Carolina, is offering a new mobile application to help truck drivers find safe and authorized parking, the city announced on Tuesday.

The Commercial Truck Parking Tool offers searchable parking lots that can be found with a driver’s current location, as well as a parking lot availability survey allowing parking lot owners to submit information such as costs and amenities, the announcement said.

The tool also outlines Charlotte’s local truck parking ordinances, including fines and penalties for violations.

A real-time map highlights commercial truck parking violations across the city, which is designed to help drivers avoid high-enforcement areas and residents stay informed about truck activity in their neighborhood.

The tool is the latest resource developed by the City of Charlotte’s Quality of Life team, which works to address top community priorities such as illegal parking, the announcement said.

A lack of truck parking is a nationwide problem, with the industry reporting that only one parking spot is available for every 11 trucks on the road. Efforts to ban trucking parking in residential neighborhoods, including in cities such as St. Paul, Minnesota, only exacerbate the issue, according to trucking advocates.

Officials in other areas beyond Charlotte have added digital tools to help drivers locate safe places to rest, including along the Interstate 5 corridor on the West Coast.
