CEO Warns: Federal Funding Reductions Could Hinder EV Charger Expansion

Vontier’s CEO Predicts Only 200,000 EV Chargers by 2030 Rather of the Expected 400,000

The recent cuts to federal funding under President Trump are likely to hinder the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide. This insight comes from Mark morelli, the head of Vontier Corp., a company that specializes in manufacturing EV chargers.

Morelli estimates that without government support for new installations, the U.S. will only see around 200,000 high-speed chargers by the year 2030—significantly lower than previous projections of about double that number.

This setback follows an declaration from the Federal Highway Administration in February regarding a halt on grants tied to the NEVI program. This initiative was part of Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure plan aimed at distributing $5 billion over five years for charger installations across all states.

“The shift towards electrification is happening; however, without this funding boost, its growth may not be as rapid,” Morelli noted.

The former president has made it clear he intends to roll back Biden’s pro-EV policies if re-elected. During his speech at last summer’s Republican National Convention, he vowed to eliminate what he termed “the electric vehicle mandate” right away if given another term.

Despite these challenges ahead for charger installation rates—currently sitting around 60,000—Morelli remains optimistic about continued electrification efforts globally. He pointed out that some regions were already experiencing slowdowns even before Trump’s presidency began.

The Role of Retailers and Automakers

A number of car manufacturers emphasize that establishing a robust network of charging stations is crucial for encouraging more consumers to switch to battery-powered vehicles. In parallel with this trend, retailers are increasingly installing EV chargers as an incentive for customers visiting their stores—a strategy seen in various countries where shopping experiences are enhanced through convenience services like charging while you shop.

Birthed from Fortive in 2020 and based out of Raleigh, North Carolina,Vontier also encompasses brands such as Matco Tools and Teletrac Navman within its diverse portfolio—a strategic advantage during times marked by geopolitical instability both domestically and internationally.
