Avikus, a trailblazer in autonomous navigation and part of HD Hyundai, has recently become a member of the newly formed MIT Maritime Consortium. This initiative kicked off at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on March 18, 2025, uniting key players in the maritime sector to foster innovation and establish global benchmarks for autonomous navigation and reducing carbon footprints.

The consortium will benefit from Avikus’ innovative HiNAS Control system—an AI-driven solution aimed at boosting safety and efficiency in maritime operations. This technology is a testament to avikus’ mission to transform how vessels operate while aligning perfectly with the consortium’s goals.

Dohyeong Lim, CEO of Avikus, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration: “Working alongside respected organizations like MIT and ABS allows us to influence future standards for autonomous shipping. It enhances our capacity to drive meaningful environmental and operational advancements within the industry.”

Professor Themis Sapsis from MIT emphasized the consortium’s potential impact: “The MIT Maritime Consortium is set to be instrumental in pioneering new technologies that will help decarbonize maritime operations globally.”

the founding members include notable entities such as HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE),Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp.,and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).Their collective leadership highlights a unified dedication towards enhancing maritime technology while promoting sustainability. Additionally, Innovation Members like Dorian LPG and Singapore Maritime Institute showcase its international scope.

Kwangpil Chang, CTO of HD KSOE stated, “Our goal through this consortium is not just about setting technological standards but also leading the charge toward developing next-gen eco-friendly vessels.”
