CMA CGM is to offer customers carbon credits in exchange for theearly return of Asian containers in a 3-month programme starting this month.

The carrier’s so-called ‘TEUs for trees’ initiative will give eligible shippers 2.5 tons of carbon credits for each box returned during calendar days 1-4.

The programme will apply to customers that return both dry and refrigerated containers originating from nearly 20 Asian countries to CMA CGM-approved return locations in port cities throughout the US.

This includes all US ocean terminals where CMA CGM receives empty containers.

CMA CGM will calculate and purchase the credit using EDI transaction data without requiring further documents from customers. Shippers will receive their carbon offset certificate at the termination of
the programme on December 31.
