In the UK, the Rail Safety & Standards Board (RSSB) is gearing up for a tech-savvy future with its Annual Business Plan for 2025-26, unveiled on April 2. this plan emphasizes digital transformation as a key strategy to modernize the rail industry.

The highlights of this initiative include:

  • Cuts in expenses: By enhancing data sharing and insights related to safety incidents and workforce health, improving signal assessments, updating guidance on National Technical Specification Notices, and introducing new cost-benefit tools for safety investments;
  • Pushing passenger safety and satisfaction: Addressing issues like trespassing, station hazards, train over-speeding while standardizing signage and risk frameworks. New standards will also tackle emissions at stations along with speed restriction management;
  • Aiming for system reliability: The focus here is on minimizing disruptions and preventing collisions through innovative working methods. This includes better tools for managing train wheel adhesion and piloting systems to monitor driver alertness;
  • Sparking tech adoption: initiatives like the PRIMA tool for assessing rain and wind risks are in play. The plan aims to create frameworks that facilitate quicker integration of AI technologies while setting standards that enhance data sharing capabilities;
  • Paving the way for freight growth: Identifying faster operational opportunities while improving network access through new gauging techniques. Enhancements in driver welfare arrangements are also part of this effort alongside predictive tools to address wagon wheel defects;
  • Sustainability efforts: Research into dynamic battery charging systems aims at maximizing existing electrification use while supporting novel light rail vehicles within current infrastructure;
  •

  • Additions for RSSB members’ value: Enhancing customer experience capabilities alongside financial sustainability initiatives will be prioritized.

“Digital transformation isn’t just something we hope to achieve; itS essential right now,” stated Mark Phillips, Chief Executive of RSSB. “Our upcoming Business Plan underscores our commitment to leveraging technology not only within RSSB but throughout the entire industry—aiming at efficiency gains, improved safety measures, and fostering innovation.”
