Revolutionizing Efficiency: ABB’s Innovative Power and Automation Solutions

[By: ABB]

ABB has landed a significant deal with West Sea Shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. They will outfit six new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Portuguese navy with an advanced power, propulsion, and automation system aimed at maximizing efficiency. These vessels are set to be delivered between 2027 and 2031.

The OPVs will feature the innovative Azipod® propulsion system, the Onboard DC Grid™ power platform, and ABB Ability™ System 800xA®, which is recognized as a leading distributed control system. Together, these technologies promise to enhance operational efficiency while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions.

“Choosing ABB’s integrated systems was a no-brainer for us,” said Renato Amorim from West Sea Shipyard. “They offer adaptability and reliability that we need for optimal performance while being environmentally friendly.” He expressed excitement about working alongside ABB on this venture.

Sindre Satre from ABB Marine & Ports shared his enthusiasm as well: “We’re thrilled that our solutions have been selected for these complex OPVs. our technology has proven triumphant in commercial applications and is now gaining traction in naval projects too.” He looks forward to deepening their collaboration with both West Sea Shipyard and the Portuguese Navy.

The Azipod® electric propulsion system stands out due to its unique design—a gearless unit that can rotate fully outside of the ship’s hull. This enhances maneuverability significantly compared to traditional shaftline systems, leading to reduced fuel usage.

The Onboard DC Grid™ is designed specifically for modern vessels; it’s compact yet modular, offering advantages over conventional AC systems such as weight savings and space efficiency. It allows integration of various energy sources like storage systems or renewable options—making ships adaptable for future needs while also cutting down on emissions significantly.

A key component of this setup is the ABB Ability™ System 800xA®,which streamlines operations by integrating multiple onboard systems into one user-friendly interface. This means crew members can manage everything they need from a single screen—boosting both safety and operational effectiveness.

Additonally, ABB will provide its Power Energy Management System (PEMS™), which works hand-in-hand with Onboard DC Grid™, ensuring optimal management of all power resources aboard in an eco-friendly manner.

As a reliable provider of top-tier power technology, ABB continues expanding its footprint within coast guard operations globally—recent contracts include partnerships with navies from Germany to Canada as well as Finland’s Border Guard.
