Delivery Drives eGrocery Boom with 37% Growth in January Sales

The U.S. online grocery market began 2025 with $10 billion in monthly sales, a 16.6% increase year over year (YOY), according to the latest Brick Meets Click Grocery Shopper Survey sponsored by Mercatus. This sustained growth—now six consecutive months of sales exceeding $9.5 billion—is largely driven by evolving fulfillment methods, including Delivery, Pickup, and Ship-to-Home, which continue to reshape grocery supply chains and last-mile logistics.

Delivery Leads as Mass Retailers Expand Logistics Networks

Online grocery delivery saw the strongest growth among fulfillment methods, surging 37% year over year to $4.1 billion. This expansion is largely attributed to aggressive membership and subscription discounts from major players like Walmart. Delivery now accounts for 41% of all eGrocery sales, an increase of 610 basis points (bps) from the previous year.
