Hapag-Lloyd’s principal shareholders, Compania Sudamericana de Vapores (CSAV) of Chile and Germany’s Kühne Maritime, have extended their shareholder agreement until the end of 2030. The agreement, which was originally set to expire in December 2026, enables the two main shareholders to consolidate their voting rights and coordinate on the operation of the shipping company.

Both CSAV and Kühne Maritime hold 30% stakes in Hapag-Lloyd. Notably absent from the renewal announcement was any mention of the City of Hamburg (HGV Hamburger Gesellschaft für Vermögens- und Beteiligungsmanagement), which currently owns 13.9% of the company.

This alliance dates back to 2014, following a merger between CSAV and Hapag-Lloyd. At that time, CSAV, Kühne Maritime, and the City of Hamburg entered into a shareholder pact, controlling 75.5% of the company. The original agreement committed CSAV and Kühne to retain their stakes for 10 years, while HGV had the option to sell half of its shares after five years.

In 2022, the shareholders renewed the pact until 2026, with CSAV highlighting the stability this agreement brought to Hapag-Lloyd’s corporate governance. Kühne Maritime is a subsidiary of Klaus-Michael Kühne’s holding company, which also controls the logistics giant Kuehne+Nagel. CSAV, owned by Chile’s Luksic family, has evolved into a holding company primarily focused on its investment in Hapag-Lloyd.
