Port of Los Angeles remains as the number one port in the USA

According to Alphaliner, the Port of Los Angeles confirmed that it handled 9.9 Mteu in 2022, its second-best annual performance but a 7.2% drop from the previous year, as congestion and labor negotiations pushed shippers to diversify its calls in the US However, the port of Los Angeles retains its top spot in the USA despite the drop in volume traffic.

Los Angeles experienced a 9.5% drop in imported containers in 2022 compared to the previous year, while the number of exported cases fell 4.7% compared to 2021. Despite the drop, the port retains its title of busiest US container port for the consecutive year.

The Port of New York and New Jersey overtook the Port of Long Beach as the No. 2 container port in the US earlier this year as shippers moved away from the troubled West Coast. The east coast port’s monthly throughput has actually outperformed Los Angeles and Long Beach in recent months.

However, the Los Angeles Port Authority, in announcing the latest results, confirmed that it was still the largest container handler in the country as of 2022.
