Three shipping lines move up in the rankings
Alphaliner: Over the course of 2022, MSC, Evergreen and ZIM have each moved up one spot in Alphaliner’s carrier rankings.
– MSC –
MSC took the lead position in January of 2022 when it overtook Maersk.
The carrier quickly widened the gap to the new #2 and MSC is likely to
hold this #1 position for the foreseeable future. Its orderbook of 124 ships is by far the industry’s largest at 1.73
Mteu.
MSC alone has 14 megamax shipsand 22 neo-panamax ships on order for delivery in 2023.
Even if some deliveries will be delayed to 2024, the Geneva-based carrier is certain to receive another major capacity boost this year.
– Evergreen –
An ambitious newbuilding program is also what pushed Evergreen to the #6 spot last year – up one place.
The Taiwanese shipping line overtook Ocean Network Express in mid May when received the 2,476 teu vessel EVER OBEY.
Evergreen’s growth was however mainly driven by large megamax vessels that it received from Samsung(two ships) and CSSC (five ships) last
year.
– ZIM –
Finally, ZIM was able to re-gain the #10 spot which it lost to Wan Hai in 2021.
With very few exceptions, ZIM’s growth was entirely driven by chartering. This is no surprise since the Haifa-based carrier is the most ‘asset light’ company among the big carriers.
Close to 95% of its fleet are chartered and 100% of the ships in its orderbook will also be procured through charters.
