Two crew members of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) owned by Euronav have died after apparently being hit by a large wave as the vessel rounded Cape Horn on Saturday, September 11.
The vessel’s managers, Northern Marine Management, confirmed the incident in an emailed statement. According to the company, the MT Arafura was fully loaded on its voyage from Brazil to Long Beach, California, when it encountered adverse weather with large waves and swells.
According to preliminary information, as the vessel rounded Cape Horn, the first mate and boatswain’s mate, both Indian nationals, were attending to an alarm at the front of the vessel when they were struck by a large wave, resulting in their deaths. A full investigation into the incident will be conducted.
The MT Arafura has altered course for Valparaiso, Chile and is scheduled to arrive on September 18. Northern Marine has stated that it is working to “best ensure” the rapid disembarkation and repatriation of the deceased and the timely relief of the crew.
“Following discussions with the Chilean maritime authorities, it is expected that some crew changes will be possible at the same time,” the company said.
The MT Arafura is a 298,991 dwt, Belgian-flagged tanker that is 100% owned by Belgian tanker company Euronav (NYSE: EURN). The vessel was built in 2016 and operates in the spot market.
“All sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to the families of both Northern Marine Management and the vessel’s owners, EURONAV,” the statement said. “The safety and welfare of all our colleagues at sea is our number one priority for both the Owners and the Managers and a full and thorough investigation will be carried out into this incident to establish the root cause, and any possible lessons to be learned.”
The statement also thanks the Chilean maritime authorities and the MRCC for their professional and continued support. Support is also being provided to the families of the victims.
