HMM signs contract for 20 new giant ships: According to World Maritime News, the South Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has signed contracts to acquire 20 mega ecological vessels with three shipyards.

In what was signed on September 28, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) will build seven and five container vessels of 23,000 TEU, respectively, which will be delivered in 2020.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) will build eight 15,000 TEU container ships to be delivered in the second quarter of 2021.

In order for the new vessels to comply with the OMI 2020 sulfur regulation, HMM said it would consider installing scrubbers or engines powered by LNG on its ships. The decision will be made after talks with the shipbuilders.

“If the shipbuilding process progresses smoothly followed by the selection of the shipyard, the signing of a letter of intent (LOI) and the termination of its contract, all new ships will be delivered sequentially at the right time to prepare for the regulations environmental issues of 2020 “. HMM said.
