On July 15, 2018, the container ship Aeneas ran aground on the Suez Canal during a transit to the south. The animation of AIS shows the chaos of the Suez Canal after the grounding and collision of two ships.
As a result of the grounding, the Panamax Alexander, Sakizaya Kalon and Osios David collided to meet in transit in convoy heading south through the canal. The ships that were behind in the convoy avoided hitting the ship Aeneas, but instead, they ran aground and collided, which caused the southern part of the channel to close for several hours.
The vessel David Osios sailed to Suez Canal, while the Panamax Alexander and the Sakizaya Kalon vessels were towed and anchored to the Great Bitter Lake. While the vessel Panamax Alexander was being dragged into the Great Bitter Lake, it collided, once again, with the container ship NYK Orpheus (shown in the video below).
The videos shown in this article, which were supplied by Genscape Vesseltracker, were created using the AIS data of the vessels involved. The left side of the screen shows the ground connection of the Aeneas vessel, while the right side shows the accumulation generated by the convoy that was heading north the Suez Canal.
